Restoration of the Sinai mosaic “The Transfiguration of Christ”

One of the most excellent early-Christian works of art, the mosaic with Christ’s transfiguration from the apse over the altar of the cathedral in St. Catherine’s monastery at Mount Sinai will have been restored by the end of the year. The 6-7th century mosaic has suffered much from regional earthquakes and the unfavourable climate and thus there was a serious risk a precious early-Christian masterpiece to be destroyed. The restoration works will be executed by the Centre for Protection of Ancient Monuments in Rome. The mosaic is to be returned to the monastery in December, for the celebrations of the church feast of St. Catherine’s brotherhood.
